Gagarin and Tereshkova, Soviet cosmonauts

Gagarin and Tereshkova, Soviet cosmonauts. Yuri Gagarin (left, 1934-1968) had become the first human in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 1 spacecraft on 12 April 1961. Following this historic spaceflight, Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union and famous worldwide. Valentina Tereshkova (right, born 1937) had become the first woman in space, orbiting the Earth in the Vostok 6 spacecraft from 16-19 June 1963. Here, the two famous cosmonauts are in military uniforms and decorated with the many medals and awards they received following their pioneering missions. Photographed in 1965.
